Although OnePlus has the motto “Never Settle”, it has always faced some difficulties with its cameras, but the OnePlus Open changes this situation with a camera that can take amazing shots.
The cameras on the first generation OnePlus smartphones were acceptable, but usually this aspect was overlooked compared to the rest of the device. That started to change with the OnePlus 9 Pro, which was a significant improvement over previous versions. Since then, every OnePlus phone has been equipped with a camera that isn't great but is undoubtedly decent enough.
The OnePlus Open, with its new Sony LYT-T808 “Pixel Stacked” camera sensor , opens up new horizons. This sensor uses a double layer to absorb more light, offering a unique experience even with a smaller sensor. In practice, it corresponds to a 1-inch sensor.
This development has led to a significant improvement in image quality.

And that goes beyond just the main sensor. The OnePlus Open is OnePlus' first device with a periscope lens on its camera, and it's excellent. The 3x lens can be increased to 6x using the crop, while the quality remains excellent.
Smartphone cameras today are generally pretty good, but what's impressive is the reliability of Google 's Pixel (and Apple 's iPhone ). The OnePlus hasn't quite reached that level yet, as its camera still needs improvement. However, in good lighting conditions, its performance is quite good. The OnePlus only struggles when the light is limited and HDR processing is required for the shots.
The best part is that it doesn't seem to rely on software. These results are due to an excellent hardware . Usually smartphone photography relies mostly on software, but with this sensor, it seems like OnePlus is combining a solid foundation with software processing that's at least on par.
If OnePlus continues with the same strategy, it can easily overtake Samsung and take second place in the Android mobile market (at least in the US). Samsung smartphones cannot maintain consistent performance and struggle in almost all lighting conditions.
OnePlus has improved significantly and we can't wait to see what comes next.
