Insta360 Go 3 Action Camera: A small GoPro

Insta360 Go 3

The newest version of Insta360 has been redesigned to look like a GoPro-style action camera. Thanks to a nifty magnetic system, you get both a tiny camera just like the Go 2, and a base-style accessory that offers a touchscreen and more traditional action camera controls.

It's still an incredibly fun, tiny camera that will fit just about anywhere, but the mount gives it even more flexibility and much longer battery life. The result is a camera that goes anywhere and shoots everything. It's not necessarily the best in every situation, but it's capable of handling anything you throw at it.

Action Styling

The biggest change to the Go 3 isn't the Go itself, but the charging case. The new charging case, which Insta360 calls the Action Pod, takes the pendant-like Go and transforms it into a GoPro-. The Pod features buttons for controlling the camera and a small, flip-out screen for monitoring your footage. When you put the Go 3 in the Action Pod, you essentially turn the Go 3 into a GoPro.

Compared to its predecessor, the Go 3 is slightly bulkier. It's 9 grams heavier (35 grams without the mount) and a few millimeters longer in every direction, but unless you're holding the two side by side, you probably won't notice the difference. It's worth noting that the size difference is big enough that any accessories for the Go 2 probably won't work with the Go 3 without some modification. This means the lens cap is interchangeable, so if you bought neutral density filters or other filters for the Go 2, they'll work just fine on the Go 3.

The Action Pod serves three purposes. It's a charging unit, a battery, and a remote display. The latter is accomplished via a new 2.2-inch touchscreen that can be flipped up to face forward so you can frame your vlogging shots. The screen is a huge step up from the Go 2's tiny offering, and is even larger and easier to use than the screen on Insta360's flagship action camera, the One RS.

The Go 3 features the same 1/2.3-inch sensor and 11mm f/2.2 lens with a 134-degree field of view. Despite using the same sensor, the Go 3 adds several new shooting modes, including photos and time-lapse, as well as higher-resolution video, which can now be shot in up to 2.7K at 30 frames per second.

There are now two microphones on the Go 3 camera, and a new wind-suppression setting that actually works quite well. All of this adds up to much, much better sound than the Go 2 was capable of.

Problems ahead

The Go 3 is a great camera, but it only has built-in memory and no SD card slot. While the hardware on the Go 3 is good, it’s not as good as what you’ll get from the GoPro Hero 11, which has a larger sensor capable of 5.3K recording. The GoPro and DJI Osmo Action 3 also have better weather protection than the Go 3. The Go 3’s camera is waterproof to 5 meters, but the Action Pod with the camera attached is only IPX4 rated.

However, the footage the Go 3 produces is more than enough for most people. If you’re mostly uploading to social media, there’s no reason to shoot anything higher than 1080p. The Go 3’s small size and magnetic mounting system allow you to capture shots that you can’t with larger cameras like the GoPro. Plus, you can get those shots quickly and easily without needing a tripod. Insta360 has done a great job of highlighting this with the included accessories. After a few months of shooting, it doesn’t take more than a minute or two to get the Go 3 set up the way you want it.
