WrestleQuest: Balances the noisy world of wrestling with classic RPGs

WrestleQuest

WrestleQuest is a wrestling role-playing game developed by Mega Cat Studios that combines the turn-based gameplay of fantasy RPGs with the world of professional wrestling. The game follows “Muchacho Man” Santos, a live action figure in a game world, as he rises through the underground wrestling scene to become the same big star as his hero, “Macho Man” Randy Savage. The game’s executive producer, AEW wrestler Jeff Jarrett, and Mega Cat Studios founder James Deighan discussed how they balanced the esoteric language of wrestling with the mechanics of role-playing games.

Mega Cat Studios, a team of wrestling fans, have always wanted to create a JRPG. As they explored the intersection of wrestling and JRPGs, they discovered a significant similarity between the two, as both feature larger-than-life characters, compelling stories, and dazzling combat. With WrestleQuest, Mega Cat Studios aimed to capture the authenticity of wrestling showmanship both in and out of the ring. To achieve this, they coined the term “wrestlification” to describe their approach to bringing classic JRPG mechanics to life through the lens of wrestling. The game introduces “internal” wrestling terms in an accessible way and incorporates wrestling concepts and techniques into JRPG mechanics. For example, the game's Hype Meter measures the crowd's excitement during a match and increases depending on the variety and success of your moves in the ring.

WrestleQuest aims to bring a new and exciting approach to turn-based combat. In the game, battles take place as wrestling matches in front of a live audience, and players must respond to the audience and approach the fight with poise and creativity. The game also incorporates behind-the-scenes wrestling terminology and mechanics, allowing players to make crucial decisions that affect the story. WrestleQuest’s gameplay is inspired by classic JRPGs such as Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Earthbound, and Super Mario RPG, but the developers have “fought” everything to create a truly unique game.

Unlike other modern wrestling games like WWE 2K, which are filled with mini-games, WrestleQuest offers an intuitive gameplay experience. The game’s executive producer, Jeff Jarrett, who has worked on wrestling games like WWF Attitude and TNA Impact!, was drawn to the project because of the fresh approach to wrestling and the genuine fan-base of developers Mega Cat Studios. Jarrett’s role as “executive wrestling producer” is to ensure that everything in the game is authentic and true to the spirit of wrestling.

WrestleQuest, after being delayed hours before its original release date, is now available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, Windows, and the Netflix app.
