Researchers develop AI helmet to prevent seizures!

Researchers from Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO Data61) have developed a new implantable artificial intelligence that has the ability to monitor and detect seizures through a helmet system. The AI ​​helmet is designed to prevent seizures in patients who have undergone brain decompression surgery.


As ZDNet reports, the system has been developed and trained using brain injury data from Monash University to monitor specific brain activity for seizures. Brain activity will be monitored while the brain is in a calm state and when a seizure is detected.

According to the official website of CSIRO Data61, using technology , the AI ​​helmet will be able to transfer the collected data to a healthcare professional. CSIRO Data61 researcher Dr. Umut Guveno announced that one in three patients is more likely to develop chronic epilepsy due to the high frequency of seizures. He also pointed out that the development of this new system could potentially reduce this number.

Monitoring brain activity after surgery is particularly critical for a patient's recovery. Current techniques used in hospitals, using bulky devices for less than 24 hours, provide a brief snapshot of a patient's brain activity during only that period of time. In contrast, the helmet developed with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) continuously monitors a patient's brain activity, via wireless means.

Data61 senior researcher Peter Marendy also added that the AI ​​helmet will enable doctors to monitor a patient’s brain activity not only in the hospital but also in real life. Marendy also noted that the new system will also help in administering appropriate medications. Combining the timing of surgery, brain swelling, as well as data will allow further study into the ideal time required to perform a reconstructive cranioplasty to achieve the best possible outcome.

Scientists estimate that this new approach will save many lives once it is implemented on a wider scale.
