Twitter knows it has a problem with misinformation. Now, it's considering a possible solution in the form of moderatorsandindicative tweets.
While , Twitter has made several attempts to remove troll accounts it has wherea much bigger problem distinguishing legitimate accounts from fake ones. This is this solution might help .
As first reported by NBC News, and then confirmed by Twitter, the company is trying various ways to stop false information.
According to NBC News, some tweets contain large orange boxes that indicate they are “misleading.”
““Reports from users have identified this Tweet as violating our Community Policy on false information,” the warning states. “The visibility of this Tweet will be reduced.”
Thus, the community can be a group of moderators who rate content and earn points for their efforts.
Importantly, a Twitter spokesperson said that this is just one of the changes that are likely to be made in the future.
“We are looking at a number of ways to address misinformation,” the spokesperson said. “This is an option that will involve feedback from the community. Misinformation is a big problem and we will try to address it in many different ways.”.
In other words, the above will not happen soon.
Twitter confirmed that there is no deadline for this project. It may not happen at all. In particular, there is nothing in Twitter's "synthetic media policy" which is coming on March 5th.
There are critical problems that the company will need to solve if Twitter decides to turn its idea into reality.
For example, what is the threshold that a Tweet must pass to be subject to evaluation and labeling? In other words, it is difficult to imagine that every Tweet will be carefully reviewed.
Even if the process is done by other Twitter users, there should be certain criteria for which tweets will be monitored and which will not.
Ultimately, it's nice to see Twitter thinking about these complex problems and trying to reduce the abundance of misinformation.
