The Rust programming language is gaining exponential adoption among developers. It provides the simplicity and safety a developer needs when writing code. According to Stack Overflow's annual developer survey, Rust has surpassed the popular Python to secure the top spot as the most popular language among developers.
Microsoft is facing issues with its C and C++ programming languages. In fact, Microsoft is spending around $150,000 per issue overall to fix the issues and vulnerabilities. In 2018, there were over 450 issues that the tech giant faced, and it’s only getting worse with time. This year, the company has faced over 470 issues.
To overcome such problems, Microsoft developers recently announced that they are using the Rust programming language instead of C and C++ to write and code Windows components. The project is known as Verona, where developers will develop a new and safer programming language for Windows.
Why adopt Rust?
According to Microsoft Research developers, the use of C and C++ for software development is a billion- dollar problem . C and C++ are among the oldest programming languages and lack the documentation for resources for modern machines . However, they work great on low- level systems and rely mainly on insecure technologies on which developers build machines in the present scenario. One thing that really concerns developers is security while coding. C and C++ do not have this ability to write safe and correct code .
Some of the reasons that led to the adoption of Rust are listed below:
- The memory and data safety guarantees made by the Rust compiler are stronger than those of C and C++.
- Less time is spent identifying problems.
- Warning and error messages are much better written in Rust than in C and C++.
Since Rust is relatively newer than C, Microsoft Research developers reported that there are several important features missing from this new language in order for it to become fully developed:
- Safe Transmutation: Safe transmutation helps safely move “plain old data” types to and from raw bytes.
- Safe Support for C Style Unions and Probable Distribution.
Rust, the programming , has been used by developers for a few years now. This year, Rust has secured the second spot as the fastest growing programming language.
