Two students at a New Jersey high school repeatedly carried out communications interference attacks (also known as jamming) on the WiFi network to avoid a test.
Both students were charged with engaging in cybercriminal activity, and no information regarding their names was released.
They used an app or program to bring down the school's entire WiFi network on different occasions to avoid taking exams, police said.
Most of the UK school curriculum is delivered online, so the lack of WiFi connectivity disrupts students' daily lesson plans.
Police believe the two students did it because they were probably asked by other students to "drop" the network.
According to the NJ report, “students appear to have used a WiFi disruption program or app on Monday afternoon to send a lot of traffic to routers in an attempt to disrupt the system so that students could not log in to the system to do their homework or take exams.”.
“One day we were supposed to take a test on Chromebook , but it wasn’t happening because of WiFi issues,” said a high school student on Millridge Road. “Of course class was interrupted.”
“Our WiFi connection experienced some issues last week,” School Director Jennifer Montesano said Monday. “The system has been restored and is now fully operational.”.
Other students stated that anyone who does not want to take exams should deal with it in other ways as it created a problem for the entire class because of them.
