All Internet users are now able to search through a massive database for those involved in the Panama Papers scandal that leaked from the law firm Mossack Fonseca via the offshoreleaks.icij.org website hosted by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
ICIJ launched the website yesterday, allowing other journalists and independent researchers to identify the people who used Mossack Fonseca's services to create offshore companies.
According to the ICIJ, the database contains information on nearly 320,000 offshore entities that are part of the Panama Papers and Offshore Leaks investigations.
The Panama Papers scandal came to light last April, when the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, together with the ICIJ, published a summary of the investigation into the activities of Mossack Fonseca. The database is about 2.6TB.
As for Greece now: The list includes 223 companies and 400 beneficiaries that are linked to our country. Names of entrepreneurs, journalists, football players, and lawyers who are connected to them and their companies are mentioned.
We must state that the establishment of an offshore company is not illegal. Also, regarding the numbers concerning Greece, we should say that Greek beneficiaries of offshore companies may be linked to another country and not to their country of origin, in cases where they have provided address details in another country, or the details of their legal representatives that are linked to the company.
