The Hellenic Police's Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate investigated a case of illegal use or access to programs or data and a regular procedure file was filed against a 45-year-old Greek national.

In particular, digital evidence was investigated, according to which the 45-year-old Greek national, together with other internet users, is carrying out electronic attacks of massive denial of service (Distributed Denial of Service – DDoS) against websites.

More specifically, the perpetrators, in return for payment, cause damage to websites and online product stores (e-shops), gaining access to third-party credit card codes and online payment details, with the aim of illegal financial gain.

It is noted that the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate was investigating a case involving a cyber attack against a pharmacy's online store (e-shop), which lasted for over a year, resulting in a total loss of 350,000 euros to the business.

The online attacks were of the type of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) and were particularly severe as "ghost" computers were used at times, causing 70,000,000 visits per day to the above online store, thus rendering it non-functional.

As part of the preliminary investigation, a thorough and in-depth police and online investigation was conducted to investigate and clarify the above cases. From the conducted digital investigation and after correlation and analysis of the online attacks in terms of their modus operandi, it emerged that the perpetrator was the 45-year-old.

During searches conducted at his parents' home and at the 45-year-old's home, two (2) hard drives and a portable storage device (USB stick) were found and seized. The on-site search of the computers revealed that the hard drives had recently been erased and formatted.

The seized digital findings and storage media will be sent to the Forensic Investigations Directorate for appropriate laboratory tests.

The analysis of the electronic traces through which the cyber attacks were carried out continues, in collaboration with the foreign countries involved, to locate and identify more persons who were acting in an organized manner against online businesses by "executing" contracts from competing companies, with the aim of illegally profiting from the digital vandalism they were committing.

The case file that is formed will be submitted to the competent First Instance Prosecutor's Office.
