ESET: As technology takes on an increasingly larger role in everyday life, many parents are called upon, among the multitude of their duties, to also incorporate proper preparation of their children so that they use the internet safely.
However, many adults, despite having the latest technology in devices, admit that their understanding of the digital world is not at the levels they would like – for example, 20% of adults in the UK admit to lacking basic online skills (PDF).
This fact worries many parents, as their children are immersed in technology and the internet from an increasingly younger age, so they themselves do not feel confident about how they can better manage this new reality.
As a recent ESET survey reveals , while the majority (88%) of parents are concerned about the websites their children can access, few parents are taking significant steps to increase security.
In this direction, ESET offers some useful tips as a basis for thought and inspiration for parents regarding the online safety of their children.
1) Familiarization with the internet and related technology
No one expects a parent to have the knowledge of a technology specialist, however it is important that they know what they are talking about and understand the tools and websites that are popular among children.
More importantly, they should be aware of potential online dangers, such as signs of online abuse, the threats faced by gamers, and of course be familiar with social media, which is extremely popular, especially among teenagers.
2) Immersion in technology and online security as early as possible
Some parents may be cautious about introducing technology, even the use of the internet from a young age, but as long as it is done in a controlled manner, they can feel safe.
ESET researcher David Harley even considers this action of such vital importance that he suggests it be carried out «before kindergarten», noting that:
«Even though I do not support giving small children immediate and unrestricted access to the cyber world, it is worth trying to give children a gentle, guided introduction: to encourage them to try things, ask questions, and participate in a constructive dialogue»
3) Ongoing discussion about social media and private life
This is perhaps the most difficult task, in terms of balancing good practices and oppression, and it is up to each parent to determine the boundaries between the two. However, as children grow older, it is important to keep the conversation about social media alive by highlighting the central role of these networks in modern life (keeping in touch, sharing and learning), but also the risks associated with them, such as harassment by strangers and online predators.
4) Securing all mobile devices
It is undoubtedly difficult and impractical for a parent to keep an eye on their child at all times, especially when they are away from home. The solution to this problem is parental control applications that give parents the ability to protect their children while they are using smartphones and tablets, while having the confidence that they will not make any purchases. Parents can use the settings to match their child’s age, discussing with them what is best in terms of safety. ESET has designed the ESET Parental Control application for Android, which protects smart devices, offering security and ease of use, without limitations in performance.
Certainly there are many things parents can do so that their children use technology and the internet safely; by starting with the above advice, they can be confident that they have provided a solid foundation for properly educating their children about online protection.
