Micron, Intel, and Toshibahave revealed that we will one day have solid state drives (SSDs). According to the companies, they will be available to the public early next year.
Ultimately, it may still be quite early for multi-layer chip technologies that would enable such capacities, but as it appears, SSD drives with capacities of 10TB will likely be available soon (in less than a year) to the general public for use in our everyday devices.
Micron and Intel report that by using 3D NAND technology, they were able to fit more than 3.5TBs into a bubblegum-sized SSD (!) and more than 10TB into a standard 2.5-inch drive.
It seems that Solid State Drives with these properties (the size of a chewing gum stick) will be slow to appear on the market, but according to the companies, we are going to see huge leaps in the capabilities of traditional hard drives.
When Solid State Drives , they were popular due to their size and weight, but they were also very expensive compared to traditional hard drives. With this technology seemingly maturing and becoming more mainstream, availability will continue to increase and prices should continue to fall, as TNW reports.
