Hackers, likely Russians, have been infiltrating and monitoring NATO communications, the Ukrainian government, university research centers in America and other "national security targets" since the summer of 2009, a government source in Washington said Monday, October 13.
This, he stressed, is a "very serious blow" to the security of America and its friendly and allied countries.
The hackers have a control and broadcast center “somewhere in Germany” and are exploiting a defunct electronic portal. Their targets have recently expanded to include a Polish energy company, a Western European country’s secret service, and a French telecommunications company.
" There is no doubt that (the hackers) have developed espionage activity on behalf of Russian national interests ," said Steve Ward , director of a private security firm that "captured" the hackers about a year ago. Informed sources in Washington, cited by the Washington Post on October 14, have discovered that in late August, the Ukrainian government and the NATO summit in Wales became the main targets of hackers using one of the most sophisticated methods of infiltrating electronic systems. They also showed interest in a forum in Europe on the topic of “pro-Russians and terrorists.”
The Russian government has repeatedly denied any involvement in Russian hackers and their activities, but it is certain that it uses their "services." Something similar is happening with the United States and European countries, as Edward Snowden has revealed.
