The well-known hacktivist group Syrian Electronic Army attempted to attack several major websites, including Google, Yahoo, Amazon, and Facebook, after hacking into the systems of domain management service provider MarkMonitor.
It appears that MarkMonitor stopped the attack before the Syrian hacktivist group could do much damage. However, screenshots posted by the Syrian Electronic Army on Twitter show that they had already gained access to MarkMonitor for Google, Yahoo, Amazon , and Facebook.
Shortly before MarkMonitor technicians detected the attack and managed to close the admin panel to prevent the hackers from taking further action, SEA published a screenshot showing that they had already started changing Facebook data.
The image shows that the registrant's address has been changed to one from Damascus. The message accompanying the screenshot reads, "Happy Birthday Mark! Facebook.com is owned by SEA."
