If Apple upgrades the iPad mini with a Retina display, then it will definitely need 7.9-inch screens, which will have a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536, and according to a new rumor released today, Apple is forced to ask Samsung to make them.
According to a report from Korean outlet ETNews, Samsung will supply these new displays to Apple, as well as the displays for the iPad 5. The displays for the iPad mini will be delivered to Apple in the third quarter, which is next month, while the iPad 5 will be delivered in the fourth quarter. Both are expected to be released around Christmas.
The report is interesting because if true, then Apple will have enough Retina iPad minis available by Christmas, while as for the iPad 5, it may not have as many available, but the Cupertino company does not expect such high demand for them.
The big question, however, is why Apple is placing its orders with Samsung, after all the painstaking efforts it has made to keep it out of the way. Previous reports had Apple starting production of Retina displays for the iPad mini this month with LG as its supplier, but ETNews says Apple is switching back to Samsung because LG was unable to handle such large orders.
