Security experts from Sophos are warning Android users about several fake games hosted on Google Play. These apps help scammers make money, but some of them have also been found to collect information from victims' phones.
One of these apps is Plants vs Zombies. The app is available on Google Play and has nothing to do with the actual popular game.
It's a simple puzzle app that leverages the popularity of the real Plants vs Zombies to attract attention. The fake game has a bunch of ads inside, but in addition to that, it installs search apps and modifies your browser's homepage.
Another fake game that is also available on Google Play is Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) 2012. In addition to ads, this game collects information such as phone number and email address.
“Various ads used by apps – such as Apperhand, Clicxap, Airpush and Startapp – likely provide money to the developer who uploaded them to Google Play,” says Graham Cluley from Sophos.
