Google Chrome 50 was released earlier today with no fewer than 20 security improvements, but for Windows and Mac users, the release is a major milestone!
Starting today, Google Chrome will no longer support older versions of both operating systems, and although the browser will continue to work on both as before, there will be no further updates and security upgrades.
This means that any vulnerabilities found in the browser, users on unsupported platforms will not receive any patches and can therefore easily become targets for cybercriminals.
Specifically, the operating systems that are not supported are Windows XP and Vista and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8. Google announced that it made this decision because the companies themselves, Microsoft and Apple, no longer actively support them.

“These older platforms lack critical security updates and are more likely to be infected with viruses or malware,” Google explained. “Google Chrome will continue to work on these platforms, but they will no longer receive feature updates and security patches. If you’re still on one of these platforms, we recommend moving to a newer operating system to ensure you continue to get the latest versions and features of Chrome.”
For Windows XP users, browser options have become increasingly limited as Google Chrome followed Internet Explorer in the footsteps of Windows XP. Mozilla Firefox continues to offer support for Windows XP, as does Opera, although it's only a matter of time before their developers move to newer platforms.
Without a doubt, users are still running old platforms but it is recommended that they upgrade them as soon as possible because they could easily become vulnerable to attacks without the security updates from Microsoft, Apple, and third-party developers.
