Facebook is encouraging UK users to register to vote in an effort to boost turnout in the May election.
Today the social network is inserting a message into the News Feed of Britons who are eligible to vote informing them that the deadline for registration is in a week and providing a link to the UK Government's registration website.
The initiative is the result of a partnership with the Electoral Commission and is not the first time Facebook has encouraged its users to vote. In the 2015 general election, the social network displayed reminders to register to vote to British users, which were seen by 15 million people at the time.
There are a number of elections taking place on May 5 in Britain including some councils, the Mayor of London, the Police and Crime Commissioner and the Welsh and Irish Assembly.

The Electoral Commission did not pay Facebook for this initiative, according to a company spokesperson.

These messages can have a noticeable impact! A 2010 study showed that 340,000 more people voted in a US congressional election because of a Facebook message informing them that it was Election Day.
“Over 35 million people in the UK use Facebook, far more than the number of people who voted in the last general election. We’re seeing millions of them already turning to the social network to share their views on the upcoming election, as well as to engage in the wider European debate about the referendum. However, simply being part of the online conversation is not enough to make your opinion count. If you’re not registered, you can’t vote! It’s that simple!” said Theo Lomas, Facebook’s policy expert.
“We hope that through partnerships like this with the Electoral Commission, we can ensure that more people know how to vote and express their opinion.”
