Anonymous DDoS attack on a Japanese airport!

The hacktivist group Anonymous has claimed responsibility for the DDoS attack that brought down the website of Narita International Airport outside Tokyo.

Anonymous

IB Times reported that the website was offline for several hours on January 22 and 23, and although flights were operating normally, passengers were unable to access the website's information.

A Twitter linked to Anonymous revealed that the attack was part of a revenge protest over the detention of Ric O'Barry, an animal rights activist. O'Barry was denied entry to Japan after being accused of planning to support a campaign against the country's dolphin slaughter.

According to activists, 20,000 dolphins, small whales and seals are killed for their meat by Japanese fishermen every year. The Taiji dolphin drive hunt is an annual event held in Taiji, Wakayama between September and March where the animals are captured for human consumption or resale. Despite the significant income for local residents, the hunt has drawn international criticism for the brutal killings and the high levels of mercury found in the dolphin meat.

This latest attack by animal rights group Anonymous is the second to hit a Japanese organization in less than a week. The hactivists also took down Nissan 's website amid their campaign against whaling.

The hackers began their attacks in November last year after Japan announced it would resume whaling this summer after a year-long hiatus.
