Valve recently announced that it would be providing Debian and Ubuntu developers with Steam keys that would give them access to all of its existing and future games. It seems that several crafty people have tried to exploit this fact in order to obtain a Steam key themselves.
The distribution of Steam keys to developers has been undertaken by an independent company called Collabora, which provides support to Valve on open source issues.
One of the Collabora employees, who is responsible for sending the keys and verifying the authenticity of the beneficiaries' information, has posted an interesting blog post, in which he lists some of the techniques used by the hackers to gain access to the games.
So far, Collabora has distributed about 280 keys, while there are about 1,200 eligible Debian developers.
Now that the offer has been extended to Ubuntu developers, it is expected that fake requests from people who have no right to claim a Steam key will increase.
