A new online campaign to block pornographic websites has been launched by a United States citizen, who sent a request to the White House website.
“We demand greater protection and accountability from internet providers and from our country,” writes the author of the petition, who signs with the initials MG.
“We ask that people be able to choose whether they have access to pornographic content, and if they wish to do so, they should contact their provider to make a request.”
The petition has so far garnered 5,342 votes. According to the White House’s “We the People” initiative, for every petition submitted to the website that manages to surpass the 100,000 signature threshold within a month, the government is asked to issue an official written response on the issue.
The report is clearly inspired by British Prime Minister David Cameron, who has announced his intentions to promote new measures to prevent underage internet users from watching inappropriate content.
According to the new plan - which is expected to be implemented by the end of 2014 - all pornographic websites will be blocked by default and in case someone wants to remove the filter in question, they will have to contact their internet service provider to deactivate it.
