Children's National fell victim to a cyberattack after its employees responded to phishing emails from hackers.
The matter came to light on December 26th last year and Children's National believes that any possible unauthorised access to its employees' email accounts could have taken place between July 26th and December 26th of the previous year.
Children's National said that patient history information held in the affected email accounts has been compromised, and while it has not received any information about any malicious use of this information, affected patients are being advised to remain vigilant for discrepancies in their insurance statements.
After discovering the incident, Children's National immediately secured the emails of the employees' accounts involved and launched an investigation into the matter, hiring an outside forensics firm to conduct the investigation.
Children's National has implemented new security and revised its systems to enhance the security of its network. It has also set up a dedicated call center with a helpline to communicate with affected patients.
