Google Chrome enhances protection against malicious downloads

Google developers have taken new measures to improve protection against malware provided by the browser Chrome with a new banner, better search and safer ads.

Google Chrome Strengthens Protection

The web browser already issues an alert whenever the user tries to download a file marked as malicious. The protection consisted of stopping the download and obtaining the user's explicit consent to continue downloading the dangerous item to their computer.

Now, in addition to this, Chrome also displays a prominent red warning before downloading the page hosting the malware downloads up, informing the user of the lurking danger.

In addition, it lets the user know that the website could try to trick them into installing programs with negative effects, which could change the home page or display pop-up ads on the web pages visited.

However, users are not denied access to the website and can return to the previous, secure page.

Also, part of the effort to make the services of the Google safest for the user is to improve the search function.

Details about the changes are scarce, but Google software engineer Lucas Ballard says the service now includes clues that can identify misleading websites. "This change reduces the chances of visiting these sites through our search results," he says in a blog post published Monday.

This measure complements Google's Unwanted Software Policy, published in mid-December 2014, which is a set of requirements that advertisers must adhere to.

Warning about suspicious websites and blocking malicious downloads comes from the Google Safe Browsing API API .

Ballard says that website owners should register their sites with Google Webmaster Tools in order to keep up to date with the latest security findings achieved by the company.

This way, the website can be verified for malware and the administrator will receive a notification about the infection, along with advice that could help solve the problem.
