Slowdown in the tablet market due to a decline in iPad orders worldwide.
The total number for tablet shipments will grow by just 7.2% this year, compared to a 52.5% increase last year.
The global tablet market is set to experience a “massive slowdown,” according to a new forecast from IDC. The research firm predicted that tablet shipments will reach 235.7 million units this year.
The reason for the decline is the decline in demand for iPads. 2014 orders iPad will decline. “This is expected,” IDC says, “as the lifespan of tablets continues to lengthen.”
The lifespan of tablets (e.g. iPad), initially, was expected to be similar to that of smartphones, around 2 to 3 years. However, this is not the case and tablets remain in use for 3 or even 4 years. This is due to the support of companies at the software level, but also to the fact that smartphones are used for several tasks, replacing larger devices. In addition, the presence of the more recent category of phablets also plays a role.
The factors expected to shake things up and reduce the drop in orders are the response to Windows 10 and what Google will do with Android and Chrome OS in the meantime.
In any case, consumers are expected to keep tablet devices for longer than smartphones.
