The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), which is supported by the FBI, has issued an advisory regarding a new financial scam that is exploiting the IC3 name to steal money from unsuspecting users.
According to the organization, cybercriminals have already managed to contact several victims after sending fake emails purporting to come from the Cybercrime Reporting Center.
The emails state that a criminal activity report has been filed against the victim's name and social security number, and demand the payment of high monetary fines to withdraw the legal actions.
“The scammers impersonate an IC3 employee to increase credibility and use the threat of legal action to create a sense of urgency,” the statement said.
“Victims are informed that they have one to two days from the date of the complaint to contact the scammers. Failure to respond to the email will result in the issuance of an arrest warrant.”.
