Yahoo has announced that it will shut down its Education, Qwiki and Directory services over the next few months. The first site to be shut down is Yahoo Education, on September 30. The website that connects users with educational institutions and educational materials is no longer a priority for the company. “After careful research, we have determined that alternative services already meet this user need, and for this reason we are proceeding with the closure of the service on September 30,” Yahoo announced.
Recently acquired services cease operation
Qwiki is the second Yahoo service to be shut down on November 1. The app was acquired by Yahoo in 2013 and was expected to continue operating for a longer period of time. The company's plans are rather different, and the short film production tool is being discontinued. However, the Qwiki team will continue to work for Yahoo on innovative digital solutions that aim to improve the user experience.
Finally, the Directory service will stop on December 31. As its name suggests, it is a directory of websites. 20 years ago, when it was introduced, the Yahoo Directory had a purpose as there were few websites.
