Malicious software that turns Skype into an "eye" for pedophiles has alarmed authorities at home and abroad. The software in question can trap the visual medium, the system's camera, allowing people with sick sexual instincts to monitor their victim at any time.
According to what has become known from the investigations of the Cybercrime Prosecution, pedophiles, with this new weapon as an ally, locate the underage victim, mainly through social networking sites and, operating with a fake profile, initiate contacts with persistence until they convince the child to chat via Skype. When confronted with questions about the lies they have told about their age, they claim to be managers looking for new talent.
When the victim "takes the bait" and agrees to perform certain actions on their computer, the malicious software is installed without their knowledge, resulting in the perpetrator seeing the child in their room, whether the computer is turned off or on.
The chilling revelation came when photos of children changing in their rooms or sleeping uncovered, etc., were released online.
So far, a similar case has been reported in Greece, and the men of the Cybercrime Unit identified the malicious software on the underage girl's laptop and deactivated it.
