The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate informs citizens about the sending of fraudulent e-mails to a large number of Greek internet users
The perpetrators use these messages to inform recipients that their email address has been selected from a global lottery run by a well-known IT company and they have won a large sum of money.
They then ask the victims to provide them with various sensitive personal information and then to pay a sum of money to send them the amount they have supposedly won
The Hellenic Police's Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate informs internet users that in recent days there has been an increase in the sending of fraudulent e-mails to a large number of internet users.
With these messages, unknown perpetrators attempt to deceive recipients in order to extract sensitive personal data and sums of money.
Then, if the recipient responds, they ask for sensitive personal information, such as name, home address, telephone number, bank account, photocopy of ID, etc. After receiving the above information, they inform the recipient that, in order for the amount to be sent to them, they must pay an advance amount of money, usually of small value, to cover necessary expenses such as taxes, shipping costs, etc.
It is noted that these messages require great attention, as in many cases, in order to convince recipients, they use the company's logo, the names of its employees, email addresses with its name, etc. and appear extremely plausible.
Finally, it is mentioned that incidents have occurred with the sending of similar e-mail messages, which are falsely claimed to originate from other related companies.
Users who receive such emails are urged not to respond and not to send personal data and money as they are in no way genuine.
