The Tor anonymity service offers Internet users a way to surf the web anonymously and prides itself on the level of security it offers. Well, it appears that the network was compromised earlier this year, along with some user data, according to a recent post on the Tor developer blog. It also says that those who used Tor from early February through July 4 of this year “should understand” that they were somehow affected by the attack.
The group goes on to say that the unknown perpetrators were able to gather information about hidden sites that users were visiting (like Silk Road, for example) and other parts of the network were likely compromised. Tor also said that “they were likely unable to see any application-level traffic (e.g., what pages were loaded or even whether users visited the hidden service they were looking for).”
