Checks what they say and identifies inaccuracies
A website aspires to become a useful tool in the hands of citizens to check the accuracy of what politicians say.
The reason is FactcheckEU, which, in view of the European elections, will systematically check the statements of politicians in order to identify inaccuracies, thus calling on candidates to be properly informed before addressing European citizens.
A typical example is the incorrect report by the President of the European Parliament and candidate for the presidency of the European Commission, Martin Schulz, about the amount of losses in Europe from tax evasion.
Specifically, the politician stated in an interview on Czech television that "2 trillion euros are being lost" due to tax evasion across Europe. According to the Commission's estimates, this amount amounts to 1 trillion euros, as noted in a relevant article on the European news website Euractiv.com.
FactcheckEU co-founder Pietro Curatolo told Euractiv that the "truth meter" will compile the speeches and statements of politicians with the aim of holding them accountable for what they say.
"We want to make sure that when politicians talk, they don't just spout numbers," he noted. He had undertaken a similar initiative in Italy, where "politicians often talk nonsense. We wanted to see if what politicians were saying was real.".
