According to the results of a recent study, YouTube negatively affects music album sales, having the same or worse impact than piracy.
In 2009, Warner Music Group decided to "hunt down" YouTube and ban videos that featured music owned by the company.
This move resulted in an increase in the company's record sales , with Top 200 albums selling almost twice as much, while it is estimated that the loss for these albums reached $1 million per year.
This research evaluated the above damages for approximately 4 years , while recording sales every week after the ban, while also taking into account statistics from Google Trends regarding artists.
This is an example of the misdirection of companies regarding low sales, who for years believed that the problem was piracy.
Of course, all of this results from this specific research and at a time when buying music via the Internet, or using applications such as Napster and Spotify.
