GS1, the international supply chain standards organization, has announced that it will use the capabilities of barcode scanning to develop wearable devices that will use the Google Glass platform.
The innovative technology has been developed in collaboration with the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) and Icare, the Swiss research institute. When a barcode on a product’s packaging is scanned using Google Glass, the consumer receives more information about the product, such as nutritional information and recipes, which can then be customized to personal preferences, provide special offers, display reviews from other consumers, and even send information to social networking sites.
GS1 has developed a range of data sharing services to enable suppliers and retailers to provide accurate information about their products through new digital technologies.
GS1 and the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) have been working together since 2011 to bring barcode scanning specifications directly to mobile devices. The two organizations are creating specifications based on existing standards that mobile device manufacturers will be able to use.
