The upcoming USB cable design is reversible, has no problem with up, right, left, and will click when you plug it in. Expect it to hit the market as soon as this year.
The new design, called USB Type-C, is designed to replace today's plethora of cables and fix a number of their shortcomings. Type-C's USB connectors will be small enough for mobile phones, the cable will be reversible end-to-end, so it doesn't matter which end you plug into your computer and which into your digital camera.
USB design firm Forum , which oversees the Universal Serial Bus specification, announced plans for a new USB cable in December, but has not finalized its exact physical design. The company said at the Intel Developer Forum conference in Shenzhen, China, that the new cable is expected to be finalized in July 2014. "We may see products with the new cable by the end of the year."
