Romanian police arrested a 40-year-old man on Wednesday, allegedly the notorious hacker “Guccifer.” The 40-year-old was sentenced to three years of probation in February 2012 for similar crimes.
Marcel Lazar Lehel is accused of bypassing security measures and gaining unauthorized access to email accounts belonging to Romanian public figures in order to steal confidential information. The hacker is also accused of leaking the victims' private correspondence in an attempt to damage their public image.
Romanian authorities said they were cooperating with US authorities in arresting Lehel.
Guccifer's victims include officials, diplomats, and other high-profile U.S. figures. Lehel has managed to hack into the accounts of members of the Bush family, Colin Powell, comedian Steve Martin, former Air Force Secretary George Roche, members of the Council on Foreign Relations, Bill Clinton, and many more.
