Micron executive says Apple's aggressive purchases contributed to memory shortage

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal after a strong earnings report, Micron Chief Business Officer Sumit Sadana hinted that Apple played a role in the current memory shortage. Micron Technology reported a stellar third quarter, with revenue up 346 % and gross profit margin approaching 85%. The company also forecast fourth-quarter revenue above market estimates.

The results sent the company's shares up 15% in after-hours trading, and the stock held onto those gains today, even as the broader chip sector faced intense volatility.

Earlier today, Apple announced significant price increases for its MacBook and iPad lineups, as well as several other products. The move comes a little more than a week after Tim Cook told The Wall Street Journal that ongoing RAM shortages would force the company to raise prices. “There’s less supply at a time when consumers want devices and memory manufacturers are passing on big price increases,” Cook said. “We absolutely need memory prices and supply to get back to reasonable levels for consumer products. That’s the key.”

The memory shortage has created significant challenges for the technology market. Consumers are facing price increases on high-demand products, while manufacturers are struggling to manage increased production costs. This situation is not unprecedented, as the memory market is known for its cyclical fluctuations. However, the current crisis appears to have been exacerbated by the purchasing strategies of large companies such as Apple.

As one of Apple’s suppliers, Micron sees the situation differently. Speaking to the Journal and without naming anyone, Micron’s CBO, Sumit Sadana, hinted that Apple is partly to blame for the current situation. In an interview Wednesday night, Sadana said the company was unable to make investments during the recent memory market downturn, when Micron’s gross profit turned negative, in part because some customers took advantage of the situation to pay extremely low prices.

Apple is known for its tough negotiations with suppliers, and its long-term purchase agreements have been repeatedly cited in recent months as a reason the company was better protected from rising memory prices than its competitors. And while those agreements allowed Apple to secure lower prices for longer periods and delay price increases for longer, the Micron executive argues that it also contributed to an unsustainable pricing environment that discouraged investment in additional capacity.

Memory shortages not only affect product prices but also technology innovation. Companies that are unable to invest in new technologies due to increased prices and tight profit margins are at a disadvantage compared to their competitors. This can lead to a slowdown in technological progress, as companies focus more on managing current challenges than on developing new products and services.

This situation highlights the need for a more balanced approach to relationships between manufacturers and suppliers. While large companies like Apple have the ability to negotiate favorable terms, it is important to ensure that suppliers have the means to invest in development and innovation. Only in this way can sustainable growth in the technology sector be achieved, which will benefit both businesses and consumers.
