Apple reduces App Store fees in China

Apple has announced a significant reduction in App Store fees in China starting March 15, 2026, reducing the standard commission from 30 % to 25% for app purchases. The decision was made after “discussions with Chinese regulators,” the company said in a statement. The reduction is aimed at avoiding regulatory interference after China last month reportedly considered a formal investigation into the App Store ’s fees and developer policies.

The new pricing policies will apply to the App Store for both iOS and iPadOS . At the same time, the commission for small businesses and mini-app developers will be reduced from 15% to 12% . This is not the first time Apple has bowed to China's will, but it is the latest example of the company's attempt to avoid conflict with the country that brings in 17% of Apple 's revenue .

The move comes at a time of intense regulatory pressure on major tech companies worldwide. Apple has already made similar changes to its app store to satisfy regulators in the European Union. The changes in China reflect a global trend toward lower fees and greater competition in the digital platform sector.

The company said in a statement: “We strive to make iOS and iPadOS the best app ecosystem and a great business opportunity for developers in China. We are committed to terms that remain fair and transparent for all developers, and we always offer competitive App Store to developers distributing apps in China, which are no higher than the overall fees in other markets.”

Users may see lower app prices or more features, while the industry faces precedent for fee reductions under regulatory pressure, putting pressure on global app store models. This development signals continued Chinese oversight over foreign app stores, likely prompting further concessions if tensions persist, especially with the US-China trade frictions .
