The Green Bay Packers American football team says cybercriminals stole the credit card data of 8,500 customers after the recent breach of its official online Pro Shop.
The group sent out notification letters about the data breach. In those letters, it says it immediately disabled all checkout and payment features after being notified on October 23 that the packersproshop.com website had been compromised.
Although the letters do not state the number of customers affected by the data breach, the Green Bay Packers reported to the Maine Attorney General that the incident affected 8,514 people.

The football team conducted an investigation that showed that the perpetrators introduced a ’s checkout page online store. Their goal was to collect personal information and payment information. However, according to the investigation, the attackers were not able to steal information from payments made using gift cards, Pro Shop website accounts, PayPal or Amazon Pay.
“We have also asked the vendor that hosts and manages the Pro Shop website to remove the malicious code from the checkout page, refresh their passwords, and confirm that there are no remaining vulnerabilities,” explained Packers Retail Business Manager Chrysta Jorgensen.
The breach affected the information entered on the Pro Shop website during checkout, including names, addresses (billing and shipping), email addresses, credit card types and numbers, card expiration dates and credit card verification numbers (CVV).

The group offers victims identity theft recovery and credit monitoring services through Experian (for three years).
Users are urged to regularly check their bank accounts. Anyone who notices attempts at identity theft or fraud should contact their bank and the relevant authorities.

As more consumers turn to online shopping and sports fans (e.g. Green Bay Packers) purchase products from football team websites, cybersecurity measures must be emphasized to protect their customers’ sensitive data.
