Apple could become the world's largest smartphone maker by 2025

Apple is expected to overtake Samsung to become the world's top smartphone maker next year. Its sales are expected to get a significant boost from the cheaper iPhone SE 4 in 2025, expected to start at $499, as well as shipments of older iPhone models to emerging markets like India.

According to the latest available global smartphone market share data for the second quarter of the year from Counterpoint, Samsung holds a 3% lead over Apple. The Cupertino company, however, usually takes the lead in the third and fourth quarters.

According to Techinsights' 2025 global smartphone shipment forecasts , Apple could maintain its momentum through the first two quarters of the year. This would effectively make Apple the world's largest smartphone maker for the first time in 2025, knocking Samsung out of its position after a long time.

The affordable iPhone SE 5 , which will be released with an OLED display for the first time, as well as continued sales of older models at reduced prices, will be the catalysts behind this expected sales boom.

Additionally, the global phone market will continue to grow until 2025, so Apple may not only have a bigger slice of the pie, but also break some sales records once the iPhone SE 4 and iPhone 17.
