For those who don't know, Apple's Game Porting Toolkit has the ability to translate Windows games to run on macOS. Developers can use this tool to assess whether games to the Mac, and then work on optimizations for the version of the game - including converting DirectX graphics to Metal.

The SDK allows developers to leverage built-in system features, such as support for game controllers, Spatial Audio, and HDR video, improving the quality and capabilities of their applications.

With macOS Sequoia, Apple is introducing Game Porting Toolkit 2, offering a number of improvements and new features. The new version provides improved graphics performance and a wider variety of programs and applications. It also supports ray tracing when used with the appropriate hardware and features the AVX2 instruction set.

The most important news is that Apple's Game Porting Toolkit is now compatible with iOS 18. At WWDC 2024, the company demonstrated how developers can use the tool to port games from Windows to macOS and then adapt them for iPhone and iPad.

When a developer optimizes their game for macOS, porting it to iOS is easy. This is because the SDK has common features, such as support for game controllers, audio, and graphics. For example, the vibrations applied to game controllers can be easily reproduced with the iPhone's haptic engine, using the same API.
