Michael Dell, CEO of the tech company that bears his name, has long championed remote work, recently calling it “the future of work.” However, it seems that even Dell (the company) can’t help but follow the trend among tech companies that are suddenly convinced that working in the office is better.

This mindset has recently led to changes in Dell's promotion policy, according to a report by Business Insider. The report states that Dell has informed employees who work remotely that they will no longer be considered for promotions. To be eligible for promotions, employees must be in their nearest "approved office" at least three days a week, according to documents seen by Business Insider.
Dell joins a long list of tech companies that have embraced remote work during the coronavirus pandemic , only to back down and ask employees to return to the office. Last August, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reportedly told employees that if they didn’t want to return to the office, they wouldn’t be doing well at the company. Even Zoom , the company that became famous for remote work, has called on its employees to return.

While Dell has slowly but surely changed its telecommuting policy in recent years, requiring its employees to come into the office at least three times a week by 2023, none of the measures have seemed designed to be punitive so far. The new policy of promoting remote workers stands out among tech companies — and goes against what Dell itself has said in the past.
In a LinkedIn post published in September 2022, less than two years ago, CEO Michael Dell pushed back against the idea that working in an office is the pillar of a good work culture. Dell even referred to office work as “forced hours.”
Dell has previously stated that its company offers equal opportunities for career advancement to the vast majority of employees, with 90% saying in a company survey that everyone has the opportunity to develop and learn new skills, regardless of whether they work in the office or telecommute.

Beyond being excluded from promotions in the Dell case, telecommuting employees face many challenges, the first of which is isolation. The lack of social contact can lead to feelings of loneliness and alienation from the team. Another major challenge is time management. Without the formal structure of an office, it can be difficult for employees to organize their time effectively and maintain productivity .Communication can also be an issue. The lack of personal contact can make it difficult to deliver clear messages and understand expectations. Finally, managing work-life balance can be a major challenge for remote workers.
