On Tuesday, the University of Michigan (UMICH) announced that staff and students must reset their university account passwords due to a recent cyberattack .
Community members were notified via emails sent by the university's CISO and CIO. According to BleepingComputer, the emails state that the password change must be made by September 12th.
The change is mandatory and failure to comply will result in the inability to log in to accounts.

“The University of Michigan requires all community members to change their UMICH password by the end of Tuesday, September 12,” CISO Sol Bermann and CIO Ravi Pendse in emails sent to university staff and students.
“Everyone at the Ann Arbor, Flint, Dearborn and Michigan Medicine campuses must change their passwords by Tuesday, September 12,” the university’s ITS Service Center (ITS) also warns.
If they don't make a change, users be able to access services that n't use UM Weblogin and managed UM devices.
"Alumni, retirees and other groups can change their passwords now . Additional information for these groups will be coming soon," the university's announcement says.
Before changing their password, members of the University of Michigan community are urged to review the guidelines for creating a secure password, in accordance with the university's "password complexity requirements."

University of Michigan: Password reset due to cyberattack
On August 28, the University of Michigan revealed that it took all of its systems and services offline on Sunday afternoon, following a cybersecurity incident .
"We made this decision to provide our IT teams with the necessary space to address the issue in the safest possible manner," the university said.
This resulted in the impact of various important university services, such as internet, M-Pathways, eResearch, DART and all student registration systems.

Two days later, CIO Ravi Pendse and President Santa J. Ono stated that internet connectivity and WiFi were restored across all UMICH campuses.
“We have no further information to share regarding the research. We do not want to share anything that could jeopardize this important work,” UMICH’s Director of Public Affairs told BleepingComputer.
