Companies that force workers back into the office are losing a lot of employees

Employment consultancy Unispace has revealed the extent of the damage that return-to-the-office orders have caused around the world, with 42% of employers surveyed saying their employee turnover was higher than they had anticipated. Additionally, 29% say they are now struggling to hire employees overall due to a lack of support for hybrid working.

The data comes from an extensive study of 9,500 employees and 6,650 employers from 17 different countries, which compares the current work situation with that of 2021.

72% of companies surveyed say they have now imposed a return-to-the-office order, much to the dismay of their employees.

Many companies, including Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, have already talked about the benefits of in-person work—such as ad-hoc communication and collaboration that leads to better productivity —as well as the benefits to the local economy .

According to Unispace, employers are typically more confident about hiring and training new employees in person.

Even so, existing employees cite increased privacy, a quiet environment, and generally better productivity as key benefits that support the argument for working from home.

A clear difference between employers and employees is highlighted in this study, with 75% of business managers reporting recent growth in their real estate and 83% of employers believing that their offices are set up to allow employees to be productive.

Although its approach and scope differ from previous studies, the findings of this report mirror the findings of countless other reports that have appeared in previous years, which show that employers are not providing the right tools or arrangements for their employees.
