What resolution will Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom finally have?

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

As you may have already seen, the first impressions of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have officially been released. Nintendo has already shown off a lot of select footage from the game, but one thing that hasn't been confirmed yet is the sequel's performance and resolution.

Fortunately, it seems that with the previews we have an idea of how it “runs” thanks to live-streamed footage. As highlighted by Nintendo World Report, this build of Tears of the Kingdom ran at 30fps at 1600 x 900 (900p) in docked mode. It was also reported that the game ran “stable” at this frame rate in most cases, but there were drops during more intense moments.

Nintendo Life senior video producer Alex Olney had similar feedback – noting that performance was "stable" most of the time but there were times when it took a heavy "hit".

Alex: “Performance is mostly pretty solid, but we did notice a few instances when using Ultrahand where the frame rate took a noticeable hit. It's not like it broke the game or completely ruined our enjoyment, but it would be nice to see such imperfections smoothed out.”

And in case you were wondering, the original game also ran at 30fps (at least after a series of updates that improved certain parts of the game) and maintained the same resolution as the new game in docked mode.

The resolution of the handheld mode in Tears of the Kingdom is expected to be the same as Breath of the Wild – with a frame rate of 30fps and dynamic resolution of 720p, but this has not been confirmed at this stage.

Please note that this is all based on a preview, so the game's performance and analysis may not necessarily reflect the final version. The game's performance could also potentially improve over time with updates. Stay tuned for more details on the game's performance and analysis when it launches to the public on May 12th.
