While Sony said the disc-less PS5 will have the same chip and performance as the Blu-ray version, Microsoft is designed as a less powerful sibling to the Series X.
In addition to the console's price and release date, Sony also listed the prices for the console's accessories. The cost for a standalone DualSense wireless controller is €70, and the Pulse 3D will be priced at €100. PS5 games will range from €50 to €70, depending on the title.
The pricing for the next-gen consoles follows a long series of announcements from Sony and Microsoft, during which the companies have been teasing their consoles throughout the year. They've taken this approach to show off the new technology they'll be bringing to the public, promising faster loading times, better graphics, and more immersive audio.
As the companies revealed their consoles, they also showed off their different approaches to what they see as the future of gaming. Sony has taken a traditional route, emphasizing how its new games will be tailored specifically for its new console's capabilities and encouraging players to buy the new device to get those new experiences. The PS5 pricing news is the latest in a busy summer for Sony. At its June event, the company showed off the white and blue designs of its new consoles, while also providing a first look at a number of new games, including Spider-Man Miles Morales, Gran Turismo 7, and Horizon Forbidden West.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be a title that will be bundled with the launch of the PS5, starting at 50 euros for the standard edition or 70 euros for the ultimate edition which also includes a remastered copy of the original Spider-Man game for PS4 as well as its DLC.
At Wednesday's event, Sony also announced the PlayStation Plus Collection, a library of hit PS4 games like God of War and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. The games will be available to subscribers of the PlayStation Plus gaming service, which costs $9.99 per month and offers more than 100 games.
As for the PS5's capabilities, Sony's new console includes a custom AMD processor and GPU capable of producing graphics in 8K resolution or 4K resolution and 120fps, as well as 16 GB of GDDR6 RAM and 825 GB of storage that will allow for significantly faster loading times.
