In an article yesterday, we announced that sales of the first Ubuntu smartphone, and as it turns out, they were probably the shortest sales in history.
We still don't know how many devices were sold and how many people managed to get at least one BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition smartphone. All we know according to a statement from the manufacturer BQ on their Google+ page is that the company was receiving about 12,000 orders per minute!
"We experienced a huge demand this morning, with over 12,000 orders per minute and unfortunately, our servers couldn't handle the load and crashed.
We only had a limited number of devices for sale. More will be available in sales that will take place throughout the month."
"Please note that all orders for Ubuntu smartphones will not be delivered in any case until March," BQ said on Google+.
According to the company, initial sales were halted due to some issues that occurred with the server being unable to handle the workload.
The first sale started at 9am CET (Central European Time) and ended early three hours later. Because there were still a few devices available, BQ decided to hold a second sale at 3pm CET, which lasted exactly 10 minutes.
BQ promised more sales this month, assuring them that all purchases will be delivered in March. The device is currently only being sold to European Union citizens, but Canonical plans to bring Ubuntu smartphones to the U.S. market in the next six months, according to the company's vice president of mobile devices, Cristian Parrino.
