Black market for organs also on Facebook

Desperate for money, many people have apparently turned to Facebook in an attempt to sell their organs, as a study by a United Kingdom newspaper reveals.

A reporter for the Sunday Post recently reported that the brother of a woman in need of a kidney transplant placed an ad on Facebook seeking a donor. In less than a week, he received 11 responses. In one of the responses, a man offered his kidney for £30,000. The respondents came from as far away as India and Mexico.

A 22-year-old dad was willing to give his kidney for money, which he needed to get himself and his pregnant fiancée back to their homeland, Hungary.

The representatives of the social network did not want to comment on the incident.

According to the United Kingdom's Human Tissue Act, it is illegal to purchase or advertise that one sells organs in the United Kingdom, said Alan Clamp, chief executive of the Human Tissue Act, which oversees the regulation of organ donations, according to the Sunday Post. Similar laws exist in almost every country worldwide. However, the long hospital waiting lists that can reach up to 7 years and the critical nature of the situations force most patients to turn to the black market.
