Tablet and laptop PC in one machine, is the "recipe" that Asus followed in the Transformer Book T100, its new "hybrid" model that is already available in the Greek market.
The T100 can function like any other laptop (more precisely, a netbook, due to its small size), but it has a button that allows the 10.1'' touchscreen, which integrates all the subsystems, to be detached, so that it can be used as a tablet.
Its advantages do not stop at its dual "character", since it also comes with Windows 8.1 , which means that it is compatible with all the software developed for older versions of the American company's operating system. In addition, it has a truly excellent autonomy, which exceeds 10 hours. And all this at a fairly affordable price, which is 370 euros for the 32 GB model, including the Office program suite (Home & Student 2013) for free.
Thus, the T100 is a very attractive proposition for those who want a "flexible" and affordable machine, which they will constantly have with them. Of course, this specific "recipe" means that they will have to make some concessions, such as the fact that the keyboard is small, or that the screen has a 16:9 ratio, resulting in it being relatively uncomfortable when, as a tablet, it is used in portrait orientation. Also, the touchpad is not very easy to use and, although the screen is satisfactory for its color rendering and viewing angles, the brightness could be higher – especially for outdoor areas.
On the other hand, the Asus “hybrid” is equipped with 2 GB of RAM and a fourth-generation Intel Atom Z3740 (Bay Trail) . Therefore, although it cannot be compared in performance with machines with processors from the Intel Core “family”, it is nevertheless quite fast, managing to comfortably cope with all applications of the modern user environment and software for Windows 7 or older versions – with the exception of very demanding programs and games.
For software storage, there is a 32 or 64 GB SSD hard drive, depending on the model, with its free space actually being considerably less. However, it accepts microSD, with the slot located on the screen, as well as the micro HDMI and microUSB, for connecting external hard drives. The wired connectivity options are complemented by the USB 3.0 located on the detachable keyboard, while another positive element of the “hybrid” is its stereo speakers, which deliver quite loud volume.
