Anyone who believes that there is… a super-spy is delusional. Anyone who thinks that the EYP “suitcase” walks around Greece and records conversations is simply… a James Bond fan. And anyone who thinks that Greek agents can do everything, like the NSA, is ridiculous. They are ordinary civil servants.
These, in short, are the conclusions of the testimony of the head of the National Intelligence Service, Mr. Dravillas, to the Parliamentary Committee. After being presented in the presence of three agents who did not speak, did not give information to anyone and played the role of... "NB agents", he then denied everything.
He claimed that there is no suitcase for surveillance but… a jeep. That is, there is a mechanism located in the special service car which, however, does not record telephone conversations, but locates the exact geographical location of a mobile phone. He even emphasized that the dragon of Paros that hit Myrto was found in a basement in Nea Filadelfia through this vehicle.
Of course, all the conversations that are made public in major cases are not given by the EYP but, as Mr. Dravillas said, by telecommunications companies. The commander of the National Intelligence Service is reported to have argued that for the lifting of secrecy and the monitoring of telephone conversations, an order must be given by a prosecutor and that this specific procedure is carried out by the provider and not the service. When asked by Elias Kasidiaris about the recording of hearings of Golden Dawn executives and MPs, he is reported to have said that “I have not given an order for the monitoring of MPs”. Subsequently, in a similar question, he is reported to have said that during his term of office, no prosecutorial request has been submitted for the lawful monitoring of MPs or politicians. According to the same information, when asked to comment on the statements of the president of LAOS, Giorgos Karatzaferis, regarding the surveillance of SYRIZA executives regarding the events in Skouria, he said that the service did not assess them as serious.
He essentially said that during his time, mass surveillance was not carried out because the technical means to do so did not exist. But then, how did they make Golden Dawn a success? How did they dismantle the criminal organization with the blackmail in Thessaloniki?
