Apple's sales are falling. The launch of a cheap iPhone is a risk

galaxy-iphoneNot even cheap iPhones could help Apple regain lost ground to catch up with Samsung – whose smartphones now garner more than double the market share.

The smartphone market expanded 46.5% in the second quarter with more than 225 million devices sold worldwide, according to data from beancounters Gartner.

However, the Korean company really made a difference, having sold 71,300,000 devices. Last year it managed to sell “only” 45.6 million. This year’s sales bring it to 31.7% of the market share.

“We are seeing demand in the premium smartphone market being concentrated mainly in the sub-$400 range,” said analyst Anshul Gupta.

Apple, on the other hand, saw 31.9 million iPhones sold during the quarter, two million fewer than the same period last year, which translates to a market share of 14.2%, as reported by theregister.

Apple is expected to get back into the game with its low-cost iPhone, but as Gupta, nothing is certain anymore. He continued:

“While the numbers show Apple the need for a new flagship model, it is very risky for the company to introduce a new model at a low price.”
