Alcatel-Lucent has perfected a new technology that works on existing telephone lines. The speeds achieved by the new technology rival those of fiber. The transmission cables are the familiar copper cables already in place by telephone companies in each country.
The standard technology is called G.fast and works by expanding the available frequencies on copper lines and reducing interference.
The maximum transfer speed is 1.1 Gigabits per second, and drops to 500 Mbps per second if the distance exceeds 300 meters, according to Technology Review.
Now that old telephone wires can be used, maybe everything will change. Fast Internet can become a reality even in countries like Greece.
Alcatel-Lucent 's new technology has already been tested and is expected to receive approval from the International Telecommunication Union in 2015 .
