Apple doesn't like OLED screens. It uses LCD IPS screens in its devices, which offer better color accuracy than OLED. But in theory, OLED is more energy efficient than LCD, which is why a new report surfaced today that wants Apple to choose an OLED screen for the iWatch, which Foxconn has already started producing.
The report comes from Taiwan's Economic Daily News and claims Apple is testing 1.5-inch OLED displays for the iWatch.
These displays are made by RiTdisplay using glass with built-in sensors, rather than a separate multitouch surface. This will help the iWatch stay thin while also leaving enough space for a larger battery.
Additionally, Economic Daily News claims that Foxconn has already started production of the watch. Apple has already placed the first orders, but the number of pieces is not large, but it is enough to do some testing on the device, at the same time they want to see how easy such a device can be put into mass production.
If the rumors are true, then Apple is about to take another big leap in technology. The screens on current smartphones are all e-ink, which Apple would never use because it's just not as pretty as an OLED. And using an OLED screen is obviously a lot harder, otherwise many would have already done it.
